The mind is an invisible part of the human body. You find it in the head or the brain. But only very few individuals pay attention to the mind. To prove this assertion, consider this question: how many times did you think of your mind today? If you are among the unusual individuals that do think of their mind daily, then you probably did. If not, you have just used your mind and are using it right now, but you do not pay any special attention to it. The news is, could be good news or bad news to you, the news is, you are not alone.
Coming back to the location of the mind, it is not necessary to try to know exactly where in the brain is the mind. What matters is that without the mind, no one can achieve anything. The mind defines the human mental state. Someone’s mental state defines who they are. A healthy mind makes a healthy mental state and a healthy physical state. It is no news to you that a messed-up mind makes up a messed-up person. In fact, there are mental exercises to help the mind function well.
As a reminder, there are three functions of the mind. They are thinking, feeling, and wanting. In other words, the mind helps humans think, feel, and desire. All these three functions are essential to a healthy individual. They will determine whether an individual is successful or not. The cognitive ability of the mind can be developed by learning and repeating activities. For example, a child learns how to write and finally masters the activity. Even though a learned child or an adult does not make a specific physical effort to write, the brain does that work behind the scenes in a combination of nervous powerful activity. The neurons fire through complex combinations that produce knowledge in the process of thinking. Again, a mind that is not coordinated will not organize thoughts.
Likewise, the function of feeling is a vital function. Feelings and emotions govern the being. The mind is responsible for both. A person with no emotions or feelings is not a person per se, that person is more closely to a natural animal than to a thinking human. And even an animal has feelings and emotions. So, if your mind is emotionless, your nature is complex.
Finally, the function of wanting or desiring is what completes the human state. Everyone desires something. The difference is what you desire or how you desire it. If your mind is in good health, your desires will be healthy. Now the mind has three functions, and it also has its habits. Experts have found sixteen habits of mind. Depending on how one works with those habits, success or failure will follow. Those habits will help you keep your mind balanced and productive because there is no success without the contribution of the mind.
The terms speak your mind, make up your mind, mind your business and like terms may not directly link the mind to human fundamental abilities to interact, relate, and respond but they signify the importance of the mind. As you study through the sixteen habits of mind, you will conclude that without the mind, humans are but biped, but no different from an ordinary animal.
